~ Joe K.

A short introduction.

I am a Lebanese born Canadian. Growing up my parents were young entrepreneurs moving us around the Edmonton area and even out to wainwright for a few years. The final destination in 2005 was here; Sherwood Park. We (my parents, brother, and I) owned and operated the highway 16 east Esso, just outside Ardrossan on the highway to Saskatoon. My family realized we had found an amazing community to be part of and grow with.

For as long as I remember I have been absolutely fascinated with visual art. Drawing all the time, even when other responsibilities took priority it would be ignored, all to enjoy making art. This got me into trouble on several occasions, but luckily I learned my lesson and that with hard work and focus there is a way to be productive and make art at the same time. By the time I was 13 years old I remember installing photoshop for the first time and teaching myself to paint digitally since then I have been practicing and developing my skills in blending the two worlds of art.

At the age of 18, the time of graduation (Barely made it) here in Sherwood park ABJ High school. I was very unsure of how I would find success or use my skills to benefit our community or even what it meant to be an adult. I kept working with my family at the Esso, I found a passion for the culinary arts! Using my graphic design skills and passion for the restaurant (Chris & Joe’s attached to the Esso) I got straight to work. I designed the Logo, Menu, and Facebook page.

During this time I was in school at NAIT for Digital Sign Arts (a now-discontinued program) and shortly after Pixel blue College for 3D modeling and animation (it was incredible to learn about 3D printing).

After my college years, it was time for my parents to retire from business life and time to relax and travel. I have worked at various restaurants throughout the years my favorite being Branches in the Greenland garden center. The environment was so enchanting and an amazing environment for inspiration. During my time there I produced four video reels to display in the dining room. Please see in the link below.

I eventually got a career job doing production management at Sun Signs Canada since 2017. This was a great experience for me in learning the ins and outs of creating art in an economically sustainable way. Providing brand and marketing materials to attract customers to businesses. (filing permit applications and renderings, maintaining communication with clients, and following bylaws and sign codes). The time spent there was very fast-paced and stressful, this took a toll on my health. I left the job due to health reasons in April 2019 and have been focusing on building my own business since.

I want to pursue creating art for local small businesses and citizens. To create branding and marketing strategies to local small businesses that otherwise would not have access to the same resources that corporations have.

My latest Art is a logo I am doing for a local Edmonton blogger.

Thank you for reading my story, I hope to really make a positive impact on the lives of young artists and the community we live in!
